A judge’s ruling that makes public the individual budgets of California’s Assembly members became official Friday after the Assembly opted not to oppose the decision in court.
Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Timothy Frawley sided with The Sacramento Bee and the Los Angeles Times in their lawsuit seeking records of each Assembly member’s spending. In a tentative ruling released Thursday, Frawley said the budget documents to which the news outlets had been denied access “indisputably contain information relating to the conduct of the public’s business.”
He said the Legislative Open Records Act “reflects a strong presumption in favor of public access to legislative records” and rejected the Assembly’s interpretation of the 1975 law passed by the state Legislature.
