In addition to last week’s good news on the nation’s unemployment and job creation rates, two surveys came out that painted a bleak picture for the millions left behind.
One, from the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University, finds that just 7 percent of those thrown out of work in the wake of the Great Recession say they have “made it back,” meaning their financial situation and sense of well-being is OK. Twenty three percent feel they are “on the way back.”
The rest – categorized as “downsized,” “devastated” or “wrecked” – are doing much worse, a situation the vast majority believe is permanent, according to the national survey of 1,200 who lost their jobs between 2008 and 2009.
