Rep. Brian Bilbray’s vote to reject a temporary extension of the payroll tax cut drew sharp criticism from his Democratic opponents Wednesday, mirroring at home the partisan divide that has roiled Washington.
House Republicans on Tuesday rebuffed calls to extend the tax break and unemployment pay as part of a bill that received overwhelming support from the Senate and White House. Bilbray, R-San Diego, dismissed the Senate-backed compromise as a “vacation vote” and said members of the upper house owed it to Americans to return to Washington, appoint conferees and negotiate a longer extension before the tax cut expires Jan. 1.
“The two-month extension was just a vote for Congress to go on vacation and for the American people to wait and American businesses to wait,” Bilbray said after returning to San Diego. “My attitude is a whole lot of Americans are going to go back to work next week and we should be doing the same thing.”
