Eber: “Sanctuary City’” game Gavin Newsom style

There is good news that should make Jerry Brown, San Fran Mayor Lee and LA Mayor Garcetti sweat for the next 55 days.  Under the law, President Trump can at 12:01pm on January 20, 2017, cut off Federal funds to the State of California, numerous cities in the State and approximately 300 cities and counties around the nation.  These are the governments that are using government resources to protect illegal aliens from the Federal government, while allowing these law breakers to harm honest, hard working Americans.

“Even if Newsom’s ordering schools to defy Federal Government’s immigration laws was justified, what authority does he possess as Lt. Governor to direct educational institutions to defy Uncle Sam? If it were possible to do so, would not such action first come from the Governor or the Legislature? It matters not to Newsom as “symbolism” is more important than substance in his world.

It is apparent that Newsom is pandering to students and supporters of higher education to gain support for his election two years from now. The sanctuary campus proposal is merely part of a larger strategy he is implementing to curry favor from the Left.

Our Lt. Gov. is a known lawbreaker—performing marriages that, at the time, were illegal.  This is a hypocrite that wants to take your gun away, while having 24/7 armed bodyguards paid for by taxpayers.  Now he wants colleges and universities to violate the law.  A terrible role model for young people, telling them if they do not like a law—just violate it and tell government to arrest them.  No problem, my guess is that any college or university that harbors illegal aliens will have an immediate end to government programs, financing—and maybe even tuition payments to students.  It is time to break the back of law breaking by government.  Don’t like a law, work to change it.

“Sanctuary City’” game Gavin Newsom style By Richard Eber

Once again California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom has gone a bridge to far. Under the umbrella of his Newsom for Governor web site, he has called upon the UC, CSU and Community Colleges to become Sanctuary Campuses to protect undocumented students attending these institutions from threatened deportation by President Elect Donald Trump.

To implement these policies Newsom proposed schools to:

  1. Move quickly toward affirming UC, CSU and Community Colleges as “Sanctuary Campuses.”
  2. A review of FERPA implications and how to protect student data from abuse by the federal government.
  3. A review of protocols and training for campus police and administrative officials in cooperating with immigration enforcement.
  4. Conclude reviews with a codified commitment from UC, CSU and Community Colleges not to share students’ personal information with the federal government.

Such a notion is reactionary because Trump has clearly stated his main priority once he takes office is protecting the border and deporting illegal’s who have a criminal record.  Law abiding students attending college would not be involved with Newsom’s “straw man” scenario where they might require government intervention to assist them.

Instead Newsom appears to be grandstanding as usual in order to garner support from the Latino Community now that ex mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa is now opposing him in the Governor’s race in 2018.

Even if Newsom’s ordering schools to defy Federal Government’s immigration laws was justified, what authority does he possess as Lt.

On another level is it the purpose of schools to embroil themselves in such matters that are not under their jurisdiction?  Is it the business of higher education to be involved with advocacy in social issues as opposed to preparing students to be an important part of the work force?

If Newsom’s wishes were granted and the Federal Government cut off their funding for this defiance, would the state be willing to make up for this shortfall?  Of course not. This is typical Progressive thinking as they seldom allocate economic resources to implement their social views unless a new tax is created.

Also to be considered is that by admitting that there are thousands of students who are not legal residents attending state colleges, Newsom is saying that a significant part of the government’s limited educational resources are being spent on non citizens. This means that other people, whose families are legal residents, who by law should be entitled to attend these schools, are left out in the cold.

With this being the case, if non legal residents are allowed to receive preferential treatment, should they not at least be required to pay out of State tuition fees?

Even beyond legal issues, what kind of a message is Newsom sending when he says it is OK to defy Federal laws, if you happen not to like them? This shows how out of touch he is with the rest of the country.

Does Newsom not realize that Hillary Clinton lost the election and that the GOP also controls both the Senate and House of Representatives?  As such, the Republican administration is likely to put him on a short leach when he tries to defy them.

Apparently, Newsom doesn’t get it. Instead of sending disappointed students to grief counselors and encouraging civil disobedience, he should encourage them to vote (if qualified).  The Lt. Governor might also be suggesting students work within the system to elect candidates that support their views on immigration.

None of this means much because the demagogic Newsom’s election strategy to become Governor hinges on gaining support from niche sub-groups. This is reflected in his pandering to the interests if the LGBT community. He also appealed to Progressive anti gun advocates sponsoring the passage of Proposition 61 which has a zero chance of ever reducing crime.

Not to be forgotten is Newsom’s sponsorship of Proposition 64 legalizing recreational use of marijuana. Again, he is trying to line up a small sub group to further his political fortunes.  At the end of the day it is not going matter a lot in California if weed is against the law or not. Few lives will be changed because of Prop 64’s passage.

Nowhere in all of Newsom’s planks, is there is any mention of job creation or promoting a more favorable business environment.  His first priority is supporting cap and trade along with unnecessary environmental regulations to stymie entrepreneurs. Newsom has not shown concern about high paying jobs leaving the state at the expense of his quest for political power.

Also on Newsom’s “no fly list” is balancing the budget or dealing with the huge 1.5 trillion pension deficit to fund the extravagant retirement benefits of state workers.  In championing additional perks for workers that employers are expected to spring for, not to mention more entitlements for the poor, his plan to pay for these bells and whistles revolves around additional taxes from the wealthy.

The question is when will Adam Smith’s “invisible hand” come down like a ton of bricks on Newsom and his progressive buddy’s and make adjustments in the marketplace?  There are already indications of this in the Golden State. The only question is when this will all happen?

For Newsome all that matters is that his divide and conquer approach to winning the Governorship in 2018 is working.  So far he has been successful. Recently, in the first poll for the race to replace Jerry Brown, he has 23% of those contacted which leads the crowded field.  He also is way ahead in fund raising which is important in winning California’s top post.

This might be expected as Newsom has been running for Governor since the election in 2014.  At least once a week he sends out pleas by email begging for donors to support his battle for social justice.

Gavin Newsom’s uttering’s on Sanctuary Campus’s is but one micro issue he is using to gain support to fulfill his political ambitions, Soon, when things die down, he will move to another hot button topic to stir the electorates emotions. This will enable Newsom to continue his quest to show voters he is the most progressive candidate, this side of Karl Marx’s utopia, to become Governor.
