Sacramento is primarily a place where bad ideas flourish and become law. But, every now and then, common sense slips through. Here’s a look at some legislative proposals that remain in play in the state Legislature.

Assembly Bill 2286
This proposal, introduced by Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, D-Winters, is Sacramento’s latest effort to undermine autonomous vehicle technologies.
The bill requires a driver to be on board vehicles greater than 10,001 pounds and instructs the DMV to produce a report on autonomous vehicles.
It also “Prohibits the DMV from issuing a deployment permit for AVs with a GVW of greater than 10,001 pounds without a human safety operator earlier than one year after the Legislative hearing and only after express authorization of the Legislature and the Governor.”
Talk about red tape.
What’s the point of all of this? It’s simple. Labor unions fear that autonomous trucks will soon be a viable means of transporting goods around the Golden State. Accordingly, they want to throw as many unnecessary hoops in the way as possible.
The state is capable of developing regulations and ensuring such technology is safely being deployed on California roads. If there’s anything California is in no short supply of, it’s red tape.
This was something even Gov. Gavin Newsom recognized last year when he vetoed a very similar piece of legislation. He wrote: “Assembly Bill 316 is unnecessary for the regulation and oversight of heavy- duty autonomous vehicle technology in California, as existing law provides sufficient authority to create the appropriate regulatory framework.”
Yet here the Legislature is pushing the same thing again. It should be rejected.
Senate Bill 549
This proposal, introduced by Sen. Josh Newman, D-Fullerton, would make it easier for California’s Indian tribes to take California cardrooms to court.
The politics here are fairly simple.

Just when you think the Democrats could not do anything more wrong…..
The issue of the cardrooms is another laugher……. You know we’ll give them gaming rights and prohibit any other non-injun from competition.
Guess the welcome mat is being yanked out now that the reality of buying courts and elections is now right in the face of the D’s.
Again, the democrat (not democratic!) party is presenting with schizophrenia. Aren’t they the ones who laud and champion EV’s in the name of enviroextremism? A way to get everyone behind “the cause” and hand over their money here and there to “save the environment?! Playing that out, one would think they WOULD BE for EV EVERYTHING! Shows ya the bottom line is the bottom line. $$$$.
As for gambling, there has always been someone standing in the way of free enterprise, capitalism. The mob had the power over casinos before. Wonder where they are now. Replaced by the native american groups? Does that make them the latest cartel, the mob? Fascinating isn’t it. How a people so robbed of so much are now becoming, at least some of them, the controllers. And democrats don’t seem to mind sharing power?
You may have addressed this next problem and I missed it, but the democrats in CA have amazingly finally gone too far. Let their totalitarian streak show. There apparently are several ballot matters they think voters are capable of voting for in November, taxing savings accounts, utilities, if residents sell their houses and leave the state, essentially stripping PROP 13 protections from everyone’s lives and driving the property taxes up 2-3X, and this starting in 2025? But dems/newsom, went scheming to the ca supreme court to nullify a valid petition campaign garnering over 1 million valid signatures to stop all of these things that they don’t feel voters are capable of handling. Is there no recourse, nothing can be done about this disenfranchisement before it’s too late? No cracker jack attorneys willing to take it on with some clever strategy? Are democrats the only ones that are shrewd? Perhaps all powers that be, right and left are in it together and want the mass exodus these things will cause.
Can’t fix crazy. Denny’s is completely gone from Oakland and Calcutta West. We are $73B or so in debt? And still giving away money to certain groups. Can’t fix crazy.
Hope for a collapse, as nothing else soaks through above shoulder stone.
