A second resident of liberal San Francisco is lined up for a spot in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. Trump nominated San Francisco attorney Harmeet Dhillon, a top official with the California Republican Party and someone who has represented him in election law cases, to be assistant attorney general for civil rights in the U.S. Department of Justice. Trump previously nominated Pacific Heights venture capitalist David Sacks to be his cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence czar, an advisory role that does not require Senate confirmation.

“Throughout her career, Harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished Civil Liberties, including taking on Big Tech for censoring our Free Speech, representing Christians who were prevented from praying together during COVID, and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against their workers. Harmeet is one of the top Election lawyers in the Country, fighting to ensure that all, and ONLY, legal votes are counted,” Trump wrote on social media Monday.
Dhillon said on the social platform X on Monday that “I’m extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda. It has been my dream to be able to serve our great country, and I am so excited to be part of an incredible team of lawyers led by @PamBondi. I cannot wait to get to work!” referring to Trump’s nominee to lead the Justice Department.
“My impression of her is that she is very conservative and hardly a champion of civil rights as it is generally understood,” Erwin Chemerinsky, the UC Berkeley law school dean and a liberal legal scholar, said Monday.
Dhillon declined to be interviewed for the story.
Dhillon — a former board member of the American Civil Liberties Union and onetime campaign contributor to Kamala Harris — unsuccessfully challenged Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel last year.
She has filed numerous cases with roots in California, lawsuits that attempt to skewer the “woke” and expose “cancel culture,” endearing her to conservatives.
Dhillon, 56, who is one of California’s three representatives on the Republican National Committee, has never held elective office. She was drubbed when she challenged Democratic state Sen. Mark Leno in 2012, with Leno winning 85% of the vote. Four years earlier, Democratic Assembly Member Tom Ammiano defeated her by a roughly 5-to-1 margin. But her legal battles, and the favorable coverage they’ve gained from right-wing media, have catapulted her beyond her roots in the California Republican Party, in which Dhillon has held leadership positions for more than a decade. She regularly appears on Fox News and other conservative networks and is beloved by the conservative base of the party in California.
