California leaders refuse to say who is responsible for new Congressional maps

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As the California legislature began hearings on the Democratic-backed plan to place new, gerrymandered Congressional maps on the ballot for a special election this year, state leaders on Tuesday struggled to answer a basic question.

Who exactly is responsible for those maps?

It was not exactly clear in the lengthy, several-hour-long hearings held in each of the State Senate and Assembly Elections Committees.

One of the pieces of legislation involved in the process, AB 604, states that the detailed maps have been prepared by the Assembly Committee on Elections and the Senate Committee on Elections. But neither leader of the committees would confirm Tuesday that those committees are drawing the maps.

State Sen. Sabrina Cervantes, D-Riverside, leads the Senate’s Elections Committee. She would not say if lawmakers were involved specifically when asked repeatedly by KCRA 3 on Tuesday.

“This is the most transparent process,” she repeatedly said, without answering the question.
