Campaign finance disclosures filed late this week reveal that supporters of the California redistricting measure known as Proposition 50 have outraised opponents: Committees supporting Prop 50 have raised $83 million, while opponents have raised $35 million.
Less than two months before Election Day, opponents are relying almost entirely on one very wealthy Bay Area donor, who has contributed $30 million.
Supporters also have big individual donors, including a group backed by billionaire liberal megadonor and hedge fund investor George Soros that has contributed $10 million. But the campaign has also attracted a vast number of much smaller donors, most of whom have given less than $150.
Prop 50’s supporters have over twice the funds — and nearly 500 times as many donors
Data reflects donations made July 1 to Sept. 24.
The support side had 66,000 donors for a total of $72,000,000, with a median donation of $100. The Oppose side had 132 donors, $35,000,000 and a median of $105.
| Position | Unique donors* | Total raised |
|---|---|---|
| Support | 66,016.00 | $83M |
| Oppose | 143.00 | $35M |
*Only donors who gave at least $100 were identifiable, so this is an undercount.
