California could ban gas furnaces and gas water heaters

California regulators are poised to outlaw the sale of natural gas-powered furnaces and gas-powered water heaters in the state by 2030.
The move would make the state the first in the country to back away from these fossil-fueled household appliances.
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is expected to take the step as part of a far-reaching plan to shrink the state’s carbon footprint and reduce nitrogen-oxide pollution. That greenhouse gas is a key ingredient in the creation of smog.
The panel is widely expected to approve the 2022 State Strategy for the State Implementation Plan which updates California’s strategy to meet air quality guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency.
“This is the binding commitment to doing this,” said Leah Louis-Prescott of RMI, a California-based think tank. “To phasing out fossil fuel appliances and committing the state of California to clean and healthy, all electric homes and businesses.”
The EPA has strengthened the eight-hour ozone standard to 70 parts per billion, a threshold 19 areas in California failed to hit in 2018.
San Diego has consistently ranked in the top ten of the nation’s cities with air quality issues linked to ozone.
CARB has already moved to wipe out emissions from cars, by banning the sale of new internal combustion engines by 2035. Buildings are next because natural gas-powered appliances are significant sources of indoor pollution.
“Homes and buildings in California generate four times more nitrogen oxide pollution than California’s gas power plants combined,” said Laura Feinstein of the Bay Area think tank SPUR.
“We’re moving forward together to address the holistic transition to cleaner buildings,” Leah Louis-Prescott said.
Feinstein added that eliminating gas-powered furnaces and water heaters is another step in the move away from the use of fossil fuels in buildings.
“When regulators vote to phase out gas appliances, what that means is that after a certain date people won’t find the gas-powered versions of those appliances in the stores when their old ones break,” Feinstein said. “So, it’s not like in 2030, you’re going to have to pull out your furnace and put in a new heat pump. It’s that the next time your furnace breaks and you have to buy a new one anyway you’ll be switching to a new zero emission version.”

State residents will be able tap into federal financial assistance included in the Inflation Reduction Act as they transition to emission-free technology.
The legislation includes rebate money for the installation of water heaters and furnaces that use heat pumps. Heat pump appliances are more efficient but also more expensive than natural gas or electric appliances.
The deadline is still eight years away, and residents can make the change now, but they need to be informed.
“We have a lot of time to continue to educate consumers and engage different stakeholders to make sure that we’re moving forward together to address the holistic transition to cleaner buildings,” Louis-Prescott said.
California nitrogen-oxide emissions are down nearly 75% since 2000. They could be cut in half again by 2035 if the state stays on track with its emission reduction goals.

38% to 40% of our electricity is produced by burning natural gas and the law of thermodynamics says the conversion from heat to electricity then back to heat you’re wasting way more energy than if you just did the one step and uses heat in the first place! Not to mention electricity loss traveling through long distance lines and various connection points ( spitters , transformers, electrical panels and breakers)that also add up losing more power.

electricity is not cheap ,and cost more than natural gas for the regular homeowner!
Not to mention the expense for all the retrofitting needed. That in order to replace or put in a new electiric stove, range, oven, clothes dryer, pool/spa, water heater and furnace. Each one would need their own breaker from the breaker box and run bigger wire to supply them power needed to run. Which means.. you’re going to have to rewire your whole freaking house!!!
Who can who’s going to afford that!

When you infact it will cause more pollution going to electric . That will also make the already monopolized electric companies more rich.( supposedly they are non-profit). Non-profit my Ass! If that was the case then why did my electric bill double from the same month last year and I used less electricity?? That is if the inflation rate is 9% that they say.So unless they come out and say inflation in 100%+. Then the electric companies are no longer a non-profit. Which would mean that they would not receive government subsidies(where do they do with it now?).A profit business would have to pay to repair and upgrade the grid.(which they rarely do, that our subsidies supposed pay for)and pay taxes like every other business!
All that would save our state money get our grid fixed and make money taxing them!
So unless the electric company wants to pay back all the profit they made from everyone(less 9% inflation).
Someone needs to go smack our politicians upside the head and say” what the hell are you thinking dumb, dumbs!

It has always frosted me that the supposed “intelligent” environmentalists have never figured the hydro carbon emissions of natural leaks in the channel from Conception to Long Beach on a daily basis. They have never computed the “particulate” air born junk with a land that had many fires yearly, open land with dirt that blows up in the air, camp fires that pumped daily 24/7 emissions….etc.

We all know the Grid can barely support what we got now in California.Because of all the Flex alerts. Actually then reason for all the flex alerts is not because of our power consumption(as we use less than past 2 decades). Since California started closing down natural gas plants and nuclear power plants. California politicians in sacremanto to say ” look how green we are!” To all the other states. Except it they cut down about 50% of our power supply. So how did they replaced that power?( (its not solar)
We outsource it from other states and Mexico.That most of them produce electricity from natural gas as well(and probably also from burning all our used tires in Mexico). Which is also not green, and not to mention an even further distance and more connections electricity needs to go. So So before all the plants were shut down the electricity didnt have to travel that far or senf a lot of power to supply locally. But instead, now massive amounts of power is sent extremely far to supply almost half the state And when a lot if power is sent through small lines and 50 year old equipment not made to handle that much. They get hot. Really hot and explode and cause fires . Which means they infact created the flex alert problem and also responsible for causing some of the wild fires we had also!.

Question: if we went to Pelosi’s home, would it have a gas-fired furnace, gas dryer and gas water heater? How about Kamala’s? Newsom’s? How about the principals in CARB? As usual, it’s likely that these regulations won’t apply to those who create them.
